In an interview at E3 2019 with Mashable, project lead Aya Kyogoku said the following;
I think this will be a positive thing for the player because in New Horizons you can stop playing in the middle of your game and it’ll still save
This confirms that there is an autosave function in Animal Crossing: New Horizons meaning players no longer have to return home and go to sleep in order to save the game. In the past games, Mr. Resetti would show up and berate the player if they did not save the game before exiting. With Autosave though, there is no longer a reason for Mr. Resetti to berate you. Kyogoku went onto say the following;
But unfortunately, because there’s no necessity to reset the game or reset button on the Switch, Mr. Resetti had a hard time. He was laid off from his position.
While it is likely Mr. Resetti will still make an appearance in Animal Crossing: New Horizons it remains to be seen in what capacity that appearance will be. Will he have a new job or remain unemployed due to the autosave feature of New Horizons? That’s a question that remains to be answered. Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be available for Nintendo Switch on March 20, 2020.
