Pokémon Direct 6/5/2019 comes with exciting news about the new 8th generation Pokémon RPG, Pokémon Sword and Shield for the Nintendo Switch. Pokémon Direct came a bit earlier than the other big announcements coming from E3 , to bring us information on Pokémon for all the fans out there. The release date is confirmed for November 15, 2019 by the Pokémon developers and you can start pre-ordering your copies today! There is also an available double pack that comes with both Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. You can watch the released content to get all the music, visuals and excitement below!
A couple of new changes in the 8th generation series that differ from the previous Pokémon games are the introduction to the “Wild area” and “Dynamax” feature. With the exception of Pokémon Let’s go Eevee and Pokémon Let’s go Pikachu, all previous Pokémon RPG games had random encounters when walking through the tall grass. However, it appears like they will be keeping the wild pokemon encounters similar to that of the most recent Pokémon game where you can visually see the Pokémon you will encounter. This allows for an interesting experience with the new “Wild area” where different Pokémon can appear depending on where you are, and what the weather is like. Also, in the “Wild area” you will be able to rotate the camera angles allowing to look around you for different things such as Pokémon or items.
Next, we have the “Dynamax” feature which allows your Pokémon to grow massive in size and increase its power. This will be an interesting addition that can potentially change how battles feel in the Pokémon Sword and Shield series. This also comes with the opportunity for “Max Raid Battles” where a total of four players, (You and your friends or AI) battle a Dynamaxed Pokémon, resembling a boss battle like feel.
The Galar region that appears to be based on the United Kingdom has a lot of exciting things to offer but first, we have to talk about the “Wild area”. The excitement of running into potentially new Pokémon everyday, surveying an open field with the ability to rotate the camera, gives off this feeling of exploration and adventure that I can never get enough of. Strolling around and seeing a Tyranitar puffing out its chest, sounds like something to look forward too right? Although there doesn’t seem to be anything that’s never before seen or any game changing features, its nice to see that with this new series, Pokémon will be continuing to do what I believe is great about it. They seem keen on expressing the idea of Pokémon and humans living together in harmony. Working together creating a world of wonder and adventure, humans and Pokémon live side by side as companions. The gym battles being a major event where people go to watch as entertainment, the different shops and buildings with Pokémon aiding in the business, the world of Pokémon shines with this collective society. With Pokémon, I’m just looking for that feeling of exploration and adventure and watching the Pokémon direct made me feel a sense of new discoveries are waiting in the Galar region of Pokémon Sword and Shield.
