After the backlash Sonic’s design received from the Sonic the Hedgehog movie’s trailer, the movie’s director Jeff Fowler tweeted the following;
This is surprising as a redesign for a CGI character is bound to be both timely and costly. It does show that Jeff Fowler is at least somewhat determined to get both the movie and character right if he is committed to doing a redesign of Sonic just based on fan feedback.
Various Twitter users have already made redesigns after the trailer was released including digital artist Edward Pun of Sucker Punch, who tweeted the following redesign;
Sonic the Hedgehog is scheduled to hit theaters on November 8th, 2019 and if you’ve yet to see the trailer you can do so below.
Unlike the Detective Pikachu movie which while looking different, you can still tell it’s a Pokemon movie at its core, it’s hard to tell what exactly Sonic the Hedgehog is. As Sonic doesn’t really look like Sonic and Jim Carrey’s Dr. Eggman while embodying the persona of Eggman for most of the trailer doesn’t look like Dr. Eggman either. This paired with various other nitpicks and complaints about the trailer makes me wonder what exactly is the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Whatever it is it doesn’t look good right now and maybe a redesign will help the movie become more recognizable as to what Sonic is and is known for.
