Today the National Museum of Play has announced the inductees for the 2019 class of the World Video Game Hall of Fame. The inductees include Mortal Kombat, Super Mario Kart, Microsoft’s Solitaire, and Colossal Cave Adventure. These were the games that were selected out of the 12 finalists which included Candy Crush Saga, Centipede, Dance Dance Revolution, Half-Life, Myst, NBA 2K, Sid Meier’s Civilization, and Super Smash Bros. Melee. The games that were chosen to be inducted for the 2019 World Video Game Hall of Fame because of their influence and impact over the years on not only the video game industry but also society and pop culture. This is a huge achievement for Mortal Kombat, Super Mario Kart, Microsoft’s Solitaire, and Colossal Cave Adventure as it shows just how big their impact has been.
While the inductees did face some tough competition such as Dance Dance Revolution, Centipede, and Myst among others no one can argue about the Mortal Kombat and the other inductees don’t deserve it. Mortal Kombat was the first fighting game that had finishing moves that were over the top and brutal. Super Mario Kart started the kart racing genre that has been going strong since it’s release and will be going even stronger with the upcoming releases of Team Sonic Racing and Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled in the near future. Let’s also not forget about the hours and hours people have spent playing Microsoft’s Solitaire, especially in the early 90s where you would boot up a PC and that would be one of the only things to play. Colossal Cave Adventure was one of the first text-based games and could it could be said that this eventually paved the way for RPGs and Visual Novels. Every single one of the games that will be inducted is deserving for one reason or another.
