It’s April 17, 2019 and Nintendo’s Version 3.0 Update for Smash Ultimate is finally here. Here’s everything you need to know:

Joker From Persona 5 Joins The Battle!

Joker from Persona 5 enters the mix as part of Challenger Pack 1 of the Fighter’s Pass for Smash Bros Ultimate. Wielding his Gun and Grappling Hook, Joker appears to be a very fun character to use. It doesn’t stop there though, as his Rebel’s Guard ability makes his attacks stronger as it builds his Rebellion Gauge. Once full, he can summon his Persona Arsene. Having Arsene around not only changes his Up-Special Grappling Hook to an invincible Wings Of Rebellion jump, but also increases his Gun’s fire rate to 3. Joker’s Final Smash features a cameo from the Phantom Theives of Hearts and features a very appealing animation sequence.

You can download Joker’s Challenger Pack today for $5.99 or buy the Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass, which includes Joker’s Challenger Pack as well as 4 Future DLC Fighters that are to be released up through February 2020 for $24.99

Along with the addition of Joker, a new stage was introduced. Mementos will be Joker’s home stage and features 11 new BGM’s from Persona 5, Persona 4 and Persona 3 respectively. The color of the stage also changes depending on which song is playing!

New Mii Fighter Costumes

Extra Mii Fighter Costumes are also available as part of Version 3.0, majority of which are Persona themed. Costumes of Sonic and Knuckles from the Sonic The Hedgehog series are also available as part of this First Round of costume drops. They will all be available for purchase for $0.75 each.

Stage Builder

Stage Builder may be one of the coolest things to come out of Version 3.0 and right off the bat they made it clear how customizable these custom stages can be. You can use the touch screen to draw landscapes and platforms as well as map out moving platforms and their directions. Stages are also multi-dimensional which is great if you want to achieve a certain design or background to give your custom stage a more personalized touch. The Stage Builder feature is FREE with the Version 3.0 update.

Video Editor

Video Editor is also available for free in this update, so now you can edit all your footage, in game, and export for sharing!

Smash World

Smash World was also announced as part of Version 3.0 but isn’t so much a feature in game as it is a companion. You can download the mobile app on your smartphone and within you are able to browse shared videos and stages. Videos can even be filtered by character! Custom stages can also be queued for download through the app so the next time you open Smash on your Switch, they’ll be ready for download.

Our Take

If you’re a big fan of the Persona series, this update should be huge for you! We’re more hyped at the additions of Smash World, Stage Builder and Video Editor, which makes the game seem more complete. We’re excited to see what the other fighters joining the mix will be, and we’re sure you are too so be sure to check back with us as we get you that information as soon as it becomes available!
