Guests and viewers of the 2019 Rainbow 6 Invitational were treated to a special treat during the ‘6 Universe’ segment of the tournament, which gave some insight on the lore and theory behind many of the beloved operators that players of Rainbow 6 Siege love to play.
Chief Writer Lucian Soulban and Narrative Director Emmanuel Ralaimihoatra-Bajolle gave some background information about the process of conveying storylines and giving life to the many Operators in the game. They ended the interview with a surprise that left many fans of the Rainbow 6 Siege community on the edge of their seats.
The Hammer And The Scalpel is a 5 minute long CGI trailer following beloved operators Grace “Dokkaebi” Nam and Mike “Thatcher” Baker on an unspecified mission in Hereford Base, a map iconic to Siege players.
Unhappy with the speed of Dokkaebi’s ability to hack enemy camera’s, Thatcher takes control by throwing one of his signature EMP grenades to disable all electronic devices and the screen fades to the title of the short.
After the mission, both Dokkaebi and Thatcher voice their opposing viewpoints on how the mission could’ve been handled, ultimately leaving Dokkaebi frustrated, to say the least.
Following their disagreements, Dokkaebi can be seen in Oxford, speaking her grievances to a person, never before seen, who is referred to as “Six”.
Six begins to explain to Dokkaebi about how anger and controlling it can be a powerful tool and how it works for Thatcher. The scene then cuts to a flashback from the previous month where we see a beaten body of Thatcher’s unconscious brother washed-up on a shoreline. Thatcher then proceeds to carry the body to a boat that he is currently in the process of renovating.
Upon gaining consciousness, Paulie is questioned by Thatcher as to who beat him. After revealing that it was a group lead by a man named Nick, Thatcher sets out to “repay” Paulie’s debts.
What ensues next is what can be described as a “certified ass whopping” by Thatcher on Nick and his crew in a pub. After the fight, the scene flashes forward, back to Dokkaebi and Six. Six explains to her that Rainbow needs people to challenge the future of the unit, and remind newer recruits of its roots. Six then reveals he is the replacement of a previous “Six”, and his true name, Harry.
